PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve drive operation characteristics for a tape cassette by reading management information to be stored in the memory of the tape cassette and storing it as backup data and then similarly updating the backup data when the management information needs to be updated. SOLUTION: Data in a Memory In Cassette(MIC) is verified at a specific point, and the data in the MIC is updated by a backup data when the data is not appropriate. As a result, it can be grasped whether the management information data in the MIC is appropriate or not and at the same time by writing backup data that is accurate at that time, the data in the MIC can be recovered to a state where appropriate management information is stored when it is judged that the management information in the MIC is judged to be improper or the like. Therefore, even if a situation where the management information data in the MIC is not appropriate occurs, the situation can be canceled, thus preventing trouble to the succeeding operations.
