Disclosed is a fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine, comprising a presupply pump (2) and a high-pressure pump (16) used to pump pressurized fuel into a common rail (18). The supply pressure of the high-pressure pump (16) is brought to a high level of pressure when the internal combustion engine is started, whereby the pressure in the common rail (18) required for optimum atomization can be built up very quickly.
