Apparatus has light emitting system (40) that irradiates object with light, and at least three sensors each having several CCD light detecting elements, arranged such that they detect the light emitted from the light emitting system and reflected by the object. For passive detection, at least two sensors are operated as passive sensors, and for active detection at least one sensors is operated. Light emitting system has light emitting characteristic which is overlaid on irradiation of the object with a predetermined light intensity pattern.
