A control device for an IC engine (107) has an interpolation control device which contains: - set point value calculation devices (301,302) to calculate set point values of a controlled variable which correspond to operating states, with the aid of corresponding control parameters of the IC engine; - a determination device (304) to determine changes of the operating state of the engine; - an interpolation coefficient calculation device to calculate an interpolation coefficient of the controlled variable for an interpolated set point value of the controlled variable between the set point values in a first and a second operating state into which the operating state of the engine is to be changed from the first operating state; and - a device (303) to calculate an interpolated set point value of the controlled variable with the aid of the interpolation coefficients and second set point value of the controlled variable in the first or second operating state.
