A can opener capable of gripping the rim of a can whilst the rim of the can is being cut, the can opener having a mechanism whereby the user of the can opener need not apply constant pressure to maintain the grip of the can opener against the rim of the can. The can opener also has a release mechanism for ejecting the lid of the can once removed from the body of the can.
