The invention relates to a warning device for controlling the distance of an automobile to an obstacle, comprising at least one sensor (2; 3) for detecting an obstacle, an evaluation and control device (5, 6, 7, 8) for calculating the distance of the vehicle to the obstacle on the basis of an output signal of the sensor (2;3) and at least one warning signal transmitter (4) which is controlled by the evaluation and control device (5, 6, 7, 8) for generating a proximity alarm signal when the distance (s) calculated by the evaluation and control device is smaller than a limiting value (S1). According to the invention, the evaluation and control device (5, 6, 7, 8) includes means (8) for estimating collision risk of the vehicle with the obstacle on the basis of the calculated distance and speed of the vehicle and the evaluation and control device controls the warning signal transmitter (4) in order to output a proximity alarm signal when the calculated distance (s) is bigger than the limiting value (S1) and calculation indicates the existence of collision risk.
