A stitch-bonded Maliknit (RTM) pile fabric has a knitted layer with transverse fiber orientation containing fibers anchored in several courses as well as several wales. The pile layer has fibers with three-dimensional random orientation. An Independent claim is also included for the process of producing such a fabric starting with a nonwoven (6) containing diagonally oriented fibers produced by cross-laying. The layers are compressed (11) before the material (7) enters the knitting zone. The fiber orientation in the fabric and its strength is controlled by adjusting the fiber orientation in the feed material (7), preferably between 10 and 80 deg .
