The method switches road traffic controls e.g. traffic lights so as to free a road for an emergency vehicle. Information on the emergency site is transmitted to the driver from a control center, together with its geographic coordinates. The current location coordinates of the vehicle are transmitted by telemetry to the control center. The current vehicle position coordinates are compared with the positions of traffic lights in the area and all those on the route to the emergency site are preselected. Only those which are in a specified range according to the speed of the vehicle are controlled. After the vehicle has passed a particular traffic light and also if the direction of the vehicle changes, the control of those traffic lights returns to normal. A warning is sent to the vehicle if a traffic light controller has already been actuated from another direction. An Independent claim is also included for a control system for carrying out the method.
