Composition for modification, degradation or bleaching of materials containing lignin, which contains (a) an oxidoreductase, a suitable oxidant and a mediator to increase the delignifying action of the oxidoreductase and/or (b) a hydrolase also contains a compound(s) selected from peracids and chelants. Mixtures of a xylanase, a chelant and a surfactant are excluded. An Independent claim is also included for a lignin modification, degradation or bleaching process, in which an enzymatic stage is combined to one stage with chemical stage(s) selected from the Q stage (removal of metal ions) and Pa stage (peracid), excluding a process using a combined X-stage (xylanase) and Q-stage in the presence of a surfactant.
