A cylindrical packing element 1 is provided with a plurality of chord members 2 and a plurality of radial septa members 3. The end of each chord member is contiguous with the end of another chord member. Each radial septa member extends from the axis of the cylinder to at least the mid-point of a chord member. Reinforcing members 4 may also be provided. In a preferred embodiment there are six chord members, formed as two equilateral triangles, six radial septa members and six reinforcing members. The packing element may be formed from a ceramic material, plastic, metal or carbon. The packing element preferably has a diameter larger than its length and the ends of the cylinder may be concave (6, Fig. 2B), convex (5, Fig. 2C) or irregular (8, Fig. 2D) as well as than straight (7, Fig. 2A). |
