PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of sterilizing active carbon and active carbon column in which miscellaneous bacteria having propagated in the active carbon column are surely sterilized with a small quantity of heat. SOLUTION: In an active carbon column 10 in which a water collecting pipe 20 is arranged above an active carbon packed bed 11 and which is controlled so that the surface of the liquid is held above the water collecting pipe 20, hot water is sent to the active carbon packed bed 11 in an upflow and is drawn out from the water collecting pipe 20 to circulate it, thereby the active carbon is subjected to sterilizing treatment. In this case, this method has a preheating process in which the hot water is circulated until it is heated to not less than prescribed temperature at which the indication of a thermometer installed in an effluent part of the water collecting pipe 20 exceeds 80 deg.C, a hot water circulating process in which the hot water is circulated for at least 10 min at the prescribed temperature at which the indication of the thermometer exceeds 80 deg.C, a hot water withdrawal process in which the hot water in the active carbon column 10 is withdrawn, and a cooling blow process in which the active carbon column 10 is filled with water, and next, water is caused to flow in until the temperature of effluent water of the active carbon column 10 becomes 40 deg.C or less.
