PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an oxygen scavenger of a new type not generating and absorbing carbon dioxide by adding cysteine as an essential component and further adding an alkalizing agent and an iron compd. SOLUTION: An oxygen scavenger contains L-, DL- or D-type cysteine as an essential component in a form of hydrochloride, an alkyl ester such as a methyl or ethyl ester or an N-acyl deriv. such as an acetyl deriv., a benzyl deriv. or a carboxymethyl deriv. and further contains an alkalizing agent such as sodium borate, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium acetate or sodium carbonate and a ferrous or ferric compd. By this constitution, the oxygen scavenger of a new type not generating and absorbing carbon dioxide can be obtained.
