In a refrigeration system for supplying cold liquid refrigerant for use as the moderator in a nuclear reactor high-pressure gas from a compressor 1 is cooled in heat-exchangers 3 and 4, partially condensed in a heat-exchanger 5, condensed and super-cooled in a heat-exchanger 6 by evaporating liquid refrigerant, expanded to an intermediate pressure in throttle 7 and passed through a moderator vessel 11 while still in liquid form. The returning liquid refrigerant may, as shown, be divided into two streams one of which is expanded to a low pressure in throttle 8 and used to supercool exchanger 6 and the other of which is evaporated and superheated in exchangers 5, 4 while cooling the highpressure refrigerant, then expanded in one or more turbines 9 to the same pressure as that produced by throttle 8. The evaporated refrigerant from heat-exchanger 6 passes through heat-exchanger 5 and is combined with the gas from the turbine discharge, the combined stream being returned to the compressor 1 via heatexchangers 4, 3 and pressure vessel 14. Throttle 8 is controlled by means 13 to maintain a constant liquid level in exchanger 6 and throttle 7 is controlled by means 12 to maintain the liquid supplied to the moderator at constant pressure. Approximately 92% of the liquid refrigerant from moderator 11 is supplied to turbine 9 and 8% to throttle 8. In a modification (not shown) all of the returning refrigerant is passed to turbine 9 and the liquid refrigerant for heat-exchanger 6 is derived from the higher pressure liquid stream upstream or downstream of exchanger 6 and throttled to said low pressure. The refrigerant may be hydrogen or hydrogen deuteride. Illustrative flow rates, temperatures and pressures are given.
