PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus capable of producing an optical fiber preform while exactly measuring the weight of a deposited soot by avoiding an outer disturbance to a load detecting part. SOLUTION: When the optical fiber preform is produced by depositing the soot on a quartz glass core rod 1 by an outside vapor deposition method, while measuring the weight of deposited soot 17 and controlling the mass of deposit of the soot 17, the rod is rotated while keeping the rotation moment of the rotation axis of the quartz glass core rod in a balanced state and the displacement in the axial direction of the rod is absorbed.
