1,162,359. Aromatic polynitriles. LUMMUS CO. 15 May, 1967 [18 May, 1966], No. 22422/67. Heading C2C. In a process for producing aromatic polynitriles by reacting aromatic hydrocarbons with NH 3 at elevated temperature in presence of an oxide catalyst, a first reaction product comprising aromatic polynitrile, aromatic mononitrile, unreacted aromatic hydrocarbon, H 2 O vapour, H 2 and unreacted NH 3 is quenched with H 2 O. The products may be hydrolysed to the polycarboxylic acids; preferably after first purifying the polynitriles by crystallization. When e.g. the hydrolysis of terephthalonitrile (from pxylene) is effected with NaOH, disodium terephthalate which is subsequently acidified is first obtained.
|
