PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To uniformly disperse graphite powder in Al or Al alloy without the aggregation even if the surface of the graphite powder is not coated with a metal and to manufacture a sintered composite material excellent in wear resistance and lubricity. SOLUTION: A powdery mixture of an Al-base metal powder and graphite powder whose shape is massive is prepd. The ratio of the particle diameter of the graphite powder to that of the metal powder is >=0.2. The powdery mixture is compacted and the resultant green compact is sintered to manufacture the objective sintered composite material contg. graphite particles dispersed in a continuous phase of Al or Al alloy.
