PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a soap which lathers even in hard water and does not generate a water-insoluble soap scum. SOLUTION: The process for producing this soap comprises neutralizing a 12-36C aliph., alicyclic, or arom. hydrocarbon-derived dicarboxylic acid represented by the formula (wherein (n) is an integer of 2-5; and (m) is an integer of 2-7) with a prim. or sec. amine in an amt. corresponding to 1/2 equivalent of the total carboxyl groups of the dicarboxlic acid, then neutralizing with an inorg. alkali or tert. amine in an amt. corresponding to 1/2 equivalent of the remaining carboxyl groups, and subjecting the neutralization product to thermal dehydration.
