PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a dispersion having high absorption coefficient and a narrow half value width, having a sharp cutting character at the edges of bathochrome and/or hypsochrome and useful as a photographic element by dispersing a specific liquid crystal-forming pigment in a solvent. SOLUTION: This dispersion has a solvent in which a liquid crystal-forming pigment of formula I [Q1 and Q2 are each a heterocyclic ring or a carbocyclic ring consisting of a (substituted) 5- or 6-members; L1 and L2 are each a (substituted) methine; M+ is a cation; (p), (q) and (r) are each 0 or 1], for example, a pigment of formula II or the like is dispersed, and the pigment forms a liquid crystal phase in the solvent. Further, the objective dispersion is obtained, for example, by subjecting a slurry of a pigment in water and a surfactant, or an aqueous medium containing a water-soluble polymer to a treatment with a pulverization means such as a ball mill or a medium mill. When used as a photographic element the slurry is preferably mixed with an aqueous gelatin at a concentration of <=30% w/w at a temperature of about 20-90 deg.C.
