PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aqueous lubricant which is excellent in lubricity, is satisfactory in oiliness, wear resistance, and extreme pressure properties, and has long-lasting rust-preventive properties, an excellent liq. stability, a good cleanability, and an excellent handleability by using a water-soluble salt of a specific sulfur-contg. polycarboxylic acid compd. SOLUTION: A water-soluble salt of a sulfur-contg. polycarboxylic acid compd., which is a reaction product of an 8C or higher unsatd, animal or vegetable oil fatty acid with a sulfur-contg., carboxylic acid represented by HOOC-R- SH (wherein R is a 2-30C alkylene), is used. One mol of the unsatd. animal or vegetable oil fatty acid is reacted with 0. 5-5 mol of the sulfur-contg. carboxylic acid at 50-100 deg.C for about 0.3-10 hr. The lubricant consists basically of water and necessary ingredients, is stored usually in the form of a concentrate, and, when used, is diluted with water so that the concn. of the water-soluble salt is usually 0.5-50 wt.%.
