The starting device is fitted to an internal combustion engine. It has a starter motor (11) which is connected to the engine via gearing (15), and a pinion (26) which can be moved along a driven shaft (17) by a solenoid (30). It also has an intermediate bearing plate (21), which is mounted on the casing of the starter motor. The intermediate bearing plate and a support (36) form an assembly unit (53), on which the gearing, the driven shaft and the pinion are preassembled on one side, and which has the solenoid (30) on the other side.
