PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject coating composition that has excellent resistance to water and weather and storage stability until it is applied and is useful as a surface treatment agent for porous plates. SOLUTION: This coating composition is composed of (E) a core/shell type aqueous emulsion including, as the core components, a copolymer containing 5-50 wt.% of (A) a polymerizable unsaturated monomer of the formula: CH2=C (R1)COOR2 [R1 is H or methyl; R2 is epoxy, a (substituted) alkyl] and/or (B) a polyvalent epoxy compound and (C) 95-50 wt.% of other polymerizable unsaturated monomer that is copolymerizable with the components A and/or B and including, as the shell components, (D) 2-50 wt.% a carboxyl group-containing unsaturated monomer and 98-50 wt.% of (C) the other components copolymerizable with the component D, and of (F) a water-soluble silicate salt of the formula: M2O.xSiO2 (M is an alkali metal; x is 2.0-7.5) at a weight ratio of 10/1-1/10 on the solid basis.
