PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst for polymerization of olefins or styrenes, capable of producing a styrene-based polymer which has a syndiotactic structure at a low cost in high efficiency. SOLUTION: This polymerization catalyst for olefins or styrenes is obtained by bringing (A) a transition metal compound into contact with (B) an oxygen- containing compound and/or a compound capable of forming an ionic complex by reacting with the transition metal compound, and optionally (C) an alkylating agent, further bring the product into contact with an adsorbable material at the same time with or after the contact, and removing the adsorbable material therefrom.
