PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an organic electroluminescent element excellent in luminous efficacy and capable of emitting high luminance by placing at least one layer containing a specific fluoranthene derivative between a pair of electrodes. SOLUTION: This organic electroluminescent element has at least one layer containing at least one compound of formula I [Ar1 and Ar2 are each a (substituted) aryl; R1 and R2 are each an alkyl; X1 to X16 are each H, a halogen, an alkyl, an alkoxy or a (substituted) aryl; neighboring groups among X1 to X16, and R1 and R2 optionally are bound to each other to form a (substituted) carbon cyclic aliphatic ring together with the substituted carbon atoms (e.g. 7,12-diphenyl-7',12'-dimethyl-3,3'-bibenzo[k]fluoranthene of formula II), between a pair of electrodes. The compound of formula I can be obtained, for example, by reacting 3,3'-bibenzo[k]fluoranthene derivative of formula III in the presence of an oxidant to make a ring.
