PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a dispersion having high absorption coefficient and a narrow half value width, having a sharp cutting character at the edges of bathochrome and/or hypsochrome and useful as a photographic element by dispersing a specific liquid crystal-forming pigment in a solvent. SOLUTION: This dispersion contains a solvent in which a liquid crystal- forming pigment of the formula: [D(X)m] (Y)n [D is merocyanine dye; Y is an ionic or nonionic solubilizing substituent and has a pKa value in water of less than 4; X is a nonionic substituent; (n)=1-10; (m)=0-10], preferably a pigment of the formula [A is an active methylene moiety or a ketomethylene moiety; R1 is a (substituted) aryl, alkyl or aralkyl; R2 to R5 are each H, an alkyl, a cycloalkyl or the like; L1 to L6 are each a (substituted) methine; Y2 is O, S, Te or the like; (s), (t) and (v) are each 0 or 1] or the like is dispersed, and the pigment forms a liquid crystal phase in a solvent.
