PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To profitably obtain a pyrazole compound useful as an intermediate for producing physiologically active substances such as medicines and agrochemicals by reacting a specific trifluoroacetic acid derivative with propionitrile. SOLUTION: A trifluoroacetic acid derivative of the formula CF3COY [Y is a halogen, OCOCF3 or OR (R is a 1-4C alkyl)] with propionitrile of the formula: CH3CH2CN in the presence of potassium t-butoxide as a base to obtain 3-oxo-4,4,4-trifluoro-2-methylbutanenitrile of the formula. The reaction is preferably carried out in an inert solvent such as benzene usually at a reaction temperature of -30 to 150 deg.C.
