摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sufficiently lower the content of hetero-containing components in a heavy oil by reacting a hydrodesulfurized heavy oil with a porous hydrorefining catalyst containing at least one hydrogenation-active metal and potassium in the presence of hydrogen. SOLUTION: A hydrodesulfurized heavy oil, at least 50% of all sulfur contained therein being one contained in sulfur-containing compounds having a mol.wt. of at least 1,000, is reacted in the presence of hydrogen with a porous hydrorefining catalyst having a specific surface area of 100-450 m2/g, an average pore volume of 0.1-2 cc/g and an average pore size of 50-400 angstrom and containing 1-20 wt.% of at least one hydrogenation active metal selected from group VI and VIII elements and 0.1-10 wt.% of potassium under conditions of a reaction temperature of 250-500 deg.C, 300-450 deg.C in particular, a reaction pressure of 1-30 MPa/cm2, 5-20 MPa/cm2 in particular, a hydrogen flow rate, in terms of hydrogen/oil ratio, of 50-5,000 L/L, 500-2,000 L/L in particular, and a liquid space velocity of 0.1-10/hr, 0.2-5/hr in particular to give a heavy oil of a total sulfur content of 0.5% or less.
