PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rescue passengers in an elevator car promptly by placing a weight on a counterweight when the balance of the car and the counterweight is kept, and losing the balance for movement of the car. SOLUTION: In rescue operation after a car 1 stops between floors and the brake of a hoist 4 is released, after a rope 7 for weight is loosened with a car 1 and a counterweight 3 balanced, a weight is placed on the counterweight 3, the balance between the car 1 and the counterweight 3 is lost, so that the counterweight 3 moves downward and the car 1 moves upward. The car 1 reaches the nearest floor, the brake is applied to stop. In an ordinary case, the weight 6 is placed above the counterweight 3, and when the car 1 and the counterweight 3 is balanced with the brake of the hoist 4 opened at the time of rescue operation, the weight 6 is placed on the counterweight 3. Only by loosening the rope 7 for weight mounted on an elevator controller 5, the weight 6 can be placed on the counterweight 3, thus it is possible to rescue passengers in the car 1 promptly.
