PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the reliability of a printing device by realizing a function which automatically discriminates the kind of an ink ribbon, and a function which detects and notifies a reverse insertion of an ink ribbon, at a low cost. SOLUTION: A CPU 2 discriminates whether a detection signal level from a ribbon end sensor loaded on a printing head in this printing device 6 is an ON level (transmission region) which becomes a judgement reference for the kind of an ink ribbon, or an OFF level (non-transmission region), prior to the execution of a printing process, and in the case of the ON level, the CPU judges that a set ink ribbon is a multi-color ribbon, and in the case of the OFF level, the printing head is pressed to a printing paper, and a carriage motor which carries a carriage loaded with the printing head, is moved by one step each for a distance of the portion of a marker length(ML), and the number of the steps is counted by an RSC counter which counts the step number, and when the RSC counted value is the marker length(ML) or higher, the CPU judges that the ink ribbon is a monochrome ribbon.
