PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound useful as a synthetic raw material or an intermediate for medicines, agrochemicals and organic chemicals by carrying out a selective hydrating reaction of only one nitrile group in a (substituted) phthalonitrile in the presence of a base in an aliphatic alcohol solvent. SOLUTION: A selective hydrating reaction of only one CN group in a phthalonitrile represented by formula I [two CN groups are mutually located at the m-or the p-position; X is Cl or F; (n) is 0-4] is carried out in the presence of a base such as an alkali metal hydroxide, an alkali metal carbonate, an alkali metal phosphate, an alkaline earth metal hydroxide or amines in an amount of preferably 0.01-1 mol based on 1 mol of the phthalonitrile in an aliphatic alcohol solvent, preferably a tertiary alcohol and using water in an amount of preferably 0.2-10 mol based on 1 mol of the phthalonitrile to thereby produce the objective compound represented by formula II (CONH2 is located at the m-or the p-position with respect to the nitrile). |
