PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the gnawing of abrasive grains into saw wire and to improve the surface properties of a cut material by composing the outermost layer in one or more plating layers on steel wire of a material essentially consisting of copper and controlling its Vickers hardness to the one below the specified value. SOLUTION: This invention is related to plated steel wire for a wire saw having one or more plating layers on steel wire, the outermost layer in the plating layers is composed of a material essentially consisting of copper, and its Vickers hardness is preferably controlled to <=135 Hv. The material essentially consisting of copper contains a material composed of copper only or an alloy in which the ratio of the content of copper is more than half, and as the copper alloy, brass is given. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, and the one in which the containing concn. of zinc is about <=45% is utilized. In the case copper or brass is used as the plating layer, the thickness of the plating layer directly after final wire drawing for the steel wire is preferably controlled to 0.05 to 0.5μm and 0.07 to 06μm respectively. |
