PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sufficiently display the performance of an internal combustion engine using a continuously controllable valve lift amount variable mechanism and a valve timing variable mechanism, by considering the transitive state of both mechanisms. SOLUTION: When the directions of change (change pattern Sθ, SL) of both a lift amount variable actuator and a rotation phase difference variable actuator are congruent ('YES' at S550) with the required performance H during a transition required by the engine, priority (S560) is given to the rotation phase difference variable actuator which is more responsive. When only one is congruent, the congruent actuator (with both 'YES'/'NO' at S550) is given priority such that hydraulic fluid output by an oil pump P is provided. This makes it possible to get closed to the required performance during transition early. Therefore, engine performance is able to be sufficiently displayed during transition.
