The present invention relates to a method for cooling down a cutting area by supplying into said area a gaseous lubrication and cooling medium. This medium is previously treated in an ioniser within an electric discharge field. To this end, the gaseous lubrication and cooling medium is supplied into the ioniser under a pressure of at least 0.04 atm. This method further involves forming from said gaseous lubrication and cooling medium a stream having a length which is smaller than 30 times its diameter at outlet of the ioniser.
