Described are tetrahydropyridine derivatives synthesized as nicotinic ligands possessing promnestic properties for the treatment of memory defects associated with cerebral ageing like Alzheimer's disease. The compounds are of the formula 1 where X is H Y is OH or X and Y form an oxo group, R is linear or branched C1-6 alkyl group, or phenyl optionally substituted with one or more halogen atoms or one or more linear or branched C1-6 alkyl, C1-6 alkoxy, linear or branched C1-6 polyhaloalkyl or hydroxyl groups, R1 is H or a group of the formula 2 where X' is H Y' is hydroxyl or X' and Y' simultaneously represent a linear or branched C1-6 alkoxy group or X' and Y' form an oxo group or a linear or branched C1-4 alkylenedioxy group, R3 is linear or branched C1-6 alkoxy group or a phenyl group substituted with halogen atoms R2 is H or linear or branched C1-6 alkyl group optionally substituted Where R and R2 both represent a CH3, X is H, Y is OH and R1 is formula 2 where X' is H, Y'is OH, then R3 cannot be phenyl.
