A bookbinding system and method of binding books including a cover/spine assembly (10) having a relatively rigid cover section (14) with a length and width at least as great as that of the stack of sheets (22) to be bound and a spine section (12) having a width greater than the height of the stack (22). The cover/spine assembly (10) and the spine section (12) are secured together along the length of the cover section (14) so that the spine section (12) can be folded along a first edge (20) with respect to the cover/spine assembly (10). A heat activated matrix is disposed on the spine section (12) including a central adhesive band (18B) and an outer band (18C) disposed between the central adhesive band (18B) and a second edge (12A) of the spine section (12). Binding is carried out by placing the stack (22) over the cover section (14) and folding the spine section (12) over the edge of the stack (22). |
