A code activated switching device for controlling the power supply to an appliance includes a keypad for entering a PIN. When the correct PIN is entered, a switch is closed, and power can flow to the appliance. The device may be permanently wired in to a power cord. Alternatively, the device could consist of a switched socket within a lockable receptacle into which the appliance plug can be placed so that it is plugged in to the socket. The socket is switched by the keypad.
