PREPARING METHOD FOR STEROL AND STANOL ESTER

PURPOSE: A method for preparing a discrete stanol/sterol-ester by direct esterification of stanol or sterol with a fatty acid provides a synthesis rout adequate to the mass production of a pure stanol/sterol ester having the formula 1 at high yield. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises adding a stanol/sterol represented by the formula 2 and an acid; and reacting the stanol/sterol with the acid in the presence of a mild acid as a catalyst to produce a discrete stanol/sterol ester represented by the formula 1: wherein R1 is a C6-C23 carbon chain; and R2 is a C3-C15 carbon chain. A melted fatty acid is used as a solvent and the mild acid is NaHSO4. The sterol/stanol-ester is added in an amount of more than about 98 wt.%. The reaction temperature is in the range from about 100°C to about 200°C. The reaction is performed under vacuum.
