PURPOSE: A manufacturing process for an iodopropynyl alcohol is provided for halogenating an alkynol including 3 ¯ 20 carbon atoms. CONSTITUTION: The present invention relates to process for halogenating an alkynol having 3 to 20 carbon atoms to produce a compound having the formula: R-C equivalent C-(CH2)x-OH, wherein R is F, C1, Br or I and x is 1 to 18. In particular, this invention provides a process for preparing a halopropyl alcohol, specifically iodopropyl alcohol. In one embodiment, iodopropyl alcohol is produced by sequentially adding potassium hydroxide, potassium iodide and an oxidizing agent to a solution of propyl alcohol at a rate and temperature sufficient to produce an iodopropyl alcohol. |
