PURPOSE: A method for preparing vinyl acetate is provided, which is carried out under atmospheric pressure and is improved in selectivity and cost. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of: 1) supplying ethylene, acetic acid and oxygen-containing gas into a reactor (10); 2) reacting ethylene, acetic acid and oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalytic material under atmospheric pressure to produce vinyl acetate; 3) obtaining a gas containing non-reacted ethylene, vinyl acetate, by-product (carbon dioxide), and inert gas such as nitrogen and/or argon from the reactor; 4) withdrawing optionally a small quantity of carbon dioxide and inert gas and non-reacted ethylene from the gas obtained from the reactor; and 5) supplying the ethylene withdrawn in step 4) and additional ethylene into the reactor of 1). The catalytic material is preferably metal of group VIII such as palladium, gold, copper, nickel; and metal selected from group I, group II, lantanides and transition metals. The amount of ethylene supplied into the reactor in step 1) is preferably more than 60 mol%. The pressure of the reactor is preferably maintained between 0.5 and 20 barg.
