PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for introducing an oxidant mixed with a carrier gas into the pre-heating zone of a continuous furnace for removing lubricants from powder metal compacts effectively are provided which prolong the life of furnace components and reduces downtime, maintenance and operating costs. CONSTITUTION: A method and apparatus are disclosed for introducing an oxidant mixed with a carrier gas into the pre-heating zone of a continuous furnace for removing lubricants from powder metal compacts effectively prior to a sinter at high temperatures. Mixing the controlled amount of the gaseous oxidant such as moisture, carbon dioxide, air or mixtures thereof with the carrier gas and introducing the mixture into the preheating zone of the continuous furnace under controlled conditions accelerate the removal of lubricants from powder metal compacts prior to the sinter at high temperature by decomposing lubricant vapors into smaller and more volatile hydrocarbons, produce sintered components with close to soot- and residue-free surfaces and with the desired physical properties, prolong the life of furnace components including muffles and belts, and reduce downtime, maintenance and operating costs.
