PURPOSE: Substituted benzylidene indenyl form amides, acetamides and propionamides are useful in the treatment of precancerous lesions and neoplasms. CONSTITUTION: The pharmaceutical composition comprises a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and a compound of formula I or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof: wherein R and R1 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, lower alkyl and amino; or R and R1 together may be oxygen; R2, R3 and R4 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, halogen, lower alkoxy, lower alkyl and alkyl mercapto; at least two of R5, R6 and R7 are identically selected from the group consisting of hydroxy and lower alkoxy, and the third is selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, halogen, lower alkoxy, lower alkyl, amino and lower dialkylamino; and R8 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and lower alkyl.
