The method involves measuring the ripple voltage present in the battery supply line when the engine is running, comparing the ripple voltage to a range of preset reference characteristic acceptable values, determined by an allowable extent of battery deterioration before issuing a signal or by a nominal setting that best fits the motor vehicle, and lastly providing an indication when the ripple voltage exceeds a range of preset values. The ripple voltage generated by the vehicle alternator or loads to which the battery is connected, indicates the liquid electrolyte level, electrode plate deterioration and terminal contact condition. The monitoring deice is connected through the vehicle's cigarette lighter socket to monitor the ripple voltage and compare it with the reference characteristic that may be a non-varying DC reference or a tracking reference characteristic such as a voltage signal or digital data within a microcontroller. Battery condition is indicated to the driver by an LED or 12V DC buzzer. |
