A rotary abrasive wheel is provided having a central hub, at least one generally flat abrasive sheet carried by the hub for co-rotation with the hub and means retaining the sheet on the hub. The abrasive wheel preferably has a plurality of abrasive sheets each with an opening through which a shank portion of the hub is received with the ends of each sheet generally rotatably spaced or misaligned with the ends of each adjacent sheet to provide a generally circular perimeter of the abrasive wheel. In one embodiment, the hub preferably has an enlarged head at one end of a generally tubular shank which has internal threads constructed to receive a threaded portion of a mandrel which has its other end received in a chuck of a rotary machine to drive the wheel for rotation. Preferably, after mounting each abrasive sheet on the shank, the free end of the shank is cold-formed providing a plurality of generally radially outwardly extending tabs which retain and capture the abrasive sheets against the enlarged head of the hub. In another embodiment, the hub has an enlarged head at one end of a generally cylindrical shank which has an externally threaded portion and a mandrel portion extending from the threaded portion and constructed to be directly received within a chuck of a rotary machine which drives the wheel for rotation. In this embodiment, to secure the abrasive sheets, a nut may be received on the threaded portion of the shank to capture the abrasive sheets against the enlarged head of the hub. In either embodiment, the periphery of the wheel defined by the ends of each generally flat abrasive sheet is rotatably engaged with a workpiece to remove material from the workpiece.
