A process for producing an ursodeoxycholate at a high yield which comprises adhering and immobilizing an anaerobic enteric bacterium capable of β-hydroxylating the keto-group at the 7-position of bile acid (i.e., capable of producing 7β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase) on the surface of a hydrophilic immobilization support containing nutritional sources and water enclosed in an interfacial bioreactor; then proliferating the bacterium to form a microbial membrane; bringing this microbial membrane into contact with a hydrophobic organic solvent in which a 7-ketolithocolate is dissolved followed by incubation; and thus microbiologically reduce the 7-ketolithocolate.
|
