PURPOSE: The absorbent structure and production of absorbent structure by mat formation together with adhesive bonded layer are provided to reduce the mass per unit area of dry shaped absorbent structure with intensity to be offered on the narrow roller. CONSTITUTION: Absorbent structure (1) consists of adhesive free cellulose fibers (4) and an airlaid material layer (3) consists of adhesive bonded cellulose fibers (5). The airlaid material later functions as support and intensify of the absorbent structure layer. The layers are bonded together by means of the adhesive of the airlaid material (3) functioning as a binding material and fibers (4) from the absorbent material layer (2) extending into the airlaid material (3). In the method, the absorbent material (2) is mat formed on an airlaid material (3). Alternatively, the absorbent material (2) is mat formed and an airlaid material (13) is then laid on top of it. After the material layers have been laid together, they are compressed (24) at a temperature in excess of 100°C. During the compression (24), the adhesive of the airlaid material is softened, and the two layers are bonded together. Some of the fibers (4) from the absorption material (2) also penetrate down into the airlaid material (3) and further connection between the layers is achieved.
