<p>A power management system for a mobile unit (106) wherein the mobile unit (106) detects the quality of the signals received from the base station (104). Based on this signal quality, the mobile unit (106) determines if the voice data (305) could be adequately transmitted using a secondary speech coder (325). If the transmission quality is adequate, the mobile unit (106) switches from a primary speech coder (320) to a secondary speech coder (325). The secondary speech coder (325) is compatible with the primary speech coder (320), but consumes significantly less battery power when coding and decoding the voice data (305). The mobile unit (106) may alternatively monitor the amount of the processor usage. If the processor usage exceeds the threshold level, the mobile unit (106) switches from the primary speech coder (320) to the secondary speech coder (325).</p> |
