Production of a thixotropic binder, comprises: (A) partly pre-esterifying fatty acid with polyalcohol; (B) reacting with carboxylic acid derivative; and (C) reacting the alkyd resin with polyamide. Production of a thixotropic binder containing a polyamide modified alkyd resin, comprises: (A) partly pre-esterifying fatty acid with polyalcohol; (B) reacting precondensate with di and/or polycarboxylic acid or derivative, and optionally monocarboxylic acid and/or diol; and (C) reacting the alkyd resin with polyamide. Solvent and/or other monomer(s) are optionally added during or after stage (B) or (C).
