The apparatus includes at least one stamp (5) having multiple print regions with raised sections. A pressure plate has multiple recesses. A drive moves the stamp in a recording direction along the recording medium. The stamp is adjusted to bring a print region into a printing position in which the raised sections lie opposite the recesses. The stamp is pressed onto the pressure plate to form recesses and raised sections in the recording medium. The stamp may be a plate or cylinder.
