The surgical instrument has a suction duct (10) for sucking up a liquefied or reduced vitreous body. The suction duct contains a radiation conductor (12) and has at least one opening (20) near which is a chamber (22) into which radiation enters. The main flow direction in the chamber is coaxial or parallel with the radiation direction. The chamber has at least three openings: one opening (16) by which radiation enters; one (20) flush with the suction opening; and an outlet (26) for the reduced and or liquefied vitreous body (28) from the chamber.
