IN-FIBRE OPTICAL ATTENUATOR

A novel method of producing an in-fibre optical attenuator is disclosed. A local section of an optical fibre is simultaneously subjected to heat and stress to produce local deformation which causes induced optical attenuation. The extent of optical attenuation is determined by the nature of the heat and stress applied. Most preferably, the method is performed using an optical fibre splicer with programmable arc parameters which are varied to control the amount of induced optical attenuation.
