The engine cylinder (11), prior to fuel injection, is filled with aspirated air via an air inlet channel (19). A blow-in tube (18) with controlled feed nozzle injects fuel into the air inlet channel (19) and is connected by a branch conduit (16) with the outlet of the fuel pump (22). In the branch conduit is a cut-off valve (17) which, dependent upon the operating phase of the engine, opens and closes the branch conduit. The cut-off valve is controllable by pressure and the control pressure is taken from the cylinder via a control conduit (13).
